There are six options for faculty tracks at UWSMPH: Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) track, Clinician Teacher (CT) track, Tenured/Tenure, Research Professor track, Teaching Professor track, and the Clinical Adjunct track. UW-Madison only recognizes the tenure track faculty as full faculty members of the university. UW-Madison Faculty Policies and Procedures govern tenured/tenure track faculty. The other categories of UWSMPH faculty are considered academic staff according to UW-Madison policies. Therefore, the policies that govern these faculty are the UW-Madison Academic Staff Policies and Procedures and SMPH specific policies and procedures.
The clinical health sciences (CHS) track faculty spend more than 50 percent of their time in clinical/public health duties and must be promoted to associate professor by the end of their eighth year.
The clinician teacher (CT) track faculty are primarily clinicians who work with learners in their clinical practices.
The tenure track is the traditional university track where faculty are hired with the expectation that they will successfully launch an independent research career in six years. If they succeed in this task they will be promoted to associate professor with tenure. Tenured associate professors who continue building their careers can promote to full professor.
The research professor track faculty contribute to the research missions of the UWSMPH through outstanding performance in basic, translational, clinical, or public health research.
The teaching professor track faculty contribute to the teaching missions of UWSMPH by advancing teaching and learning in their discipline, and/or using innovative strategies that produce course and/or curriculum improvement.
The clinical adjunct track faculty are community clinicians who volunteer their time to aid in the training of learners across the state of Wisconsin.
