Dean’s Teaching Award Winners

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Dean’s Teaching Awards were established in 1992 to honor outstanding contributions in student education in medical school programs.

These awards are selected by a committee of faculty that have previously been honored for their excellence in teaching, and as such, are the UW School of Medicine and Public Health’s only peer-selected teaching award.

2024 Winners

Katie Kastner, MD

Katie Kastner, MD

Dr. Kastner joined the UW Department of Pediatrics in 2017 and has served in multiple education leadership roles. Since 2019, she has been the Assistant Block Leader for the Phase 1 Human Family Tree Block. In 2021, she accepted the role of Medicine Discipline Training Coordinator for the Wisconsin Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program and recently created a Phase 3 public health selective for medical students to participate in the LEND program. Dr. Kastner has also worked to increase opportunities across the learning continuum, including Family Medicine Residents, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellows and Neonatology Fellows in the Waisman Clinics, as well as interdisciplinary learners to prepare health professionals to care for individuals with developmental disabilities. She is the rotation director for the developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) rotation and a CORE mentor for the pediatrics residency program. Dr. Kastner received her BS from University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and her MD from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

William "Nick" Rose, MD

Nick Rose, MD

Dr. Rose was recruited in 2011 as a faculty member in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, where he is currently the director of the residency program transfusion medicine rotation and the transfusion medicine fellowship director. Since starting in the department, he has worked to design engaging basic science and public health selectives (BSS/PHS), with the distinction of having designed, directed, and participated as the sole or primary instructor for four of the most popular selectives at SMPH.  Dr. Rose has created an educational website, a resident coaching program, a blood bank rotation for anesthesiology residents and co-created the UW Pathology International Observation Program. He has been a Longitudinal Teacher Coach, a PaCE Facilitator and medium group case-based facilitator for first- and second-year medical students. Additionally, Dr. Rose has made significant educational contributions at the regional and national level, where he is acknowledged as an expert in the field of transfusion medicine and medical education and regularly presents for national organizations. Dr. Rose received his BSE from the University of Pennsylvania and his MD from Texas Tech University.

Claudia Reardon, MD

Claudia Reardon, MD

Dr. Reardon joined the UW Department of Psychiatry in 2010 and has made extraordinary contributions to medical student and resident education. She has been a key figure in developing advocacy curriculum in the medical student curriculum and has served as a QI Coach for first- and second-year students since 2019. Dr. Reardon has developed and taught two Phase 3 public health selectives, gaining national recognition for her sports psychiatry public health course. She is also the faculty advisor for the Psychiatry Student Interest Group. Dr. Reardon develops and directs the Department of Psychiatry quality improvement curriculum for residents. Her curriculum development work and teaching have won her numerous local and national awards and recognition. Dr. Reardon received her BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her MD from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

 

Irina Shakhnovich, MD, RPVI, FACS

Irina Shakhnovich, MD, RPVI, FACS

Dr. Shakhnovich is a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Gunderson Health System and has been involved in teaching medical students as part of the Western Academic Campus since 2017. She has served as the Surgical and Procedural Care (SPC) Site Block Director since the initiation of the ForWard curriculum and for the previous surgical clerkship, and was integral in helping to design and implement the SPC curriculum. Dr. Shakhnovich is an advisor and instructor in the Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM) program in LaCrosse. Dr. Shakhnovich has developed a surgical simulation lab program for medical students, leads virtual lectures for the statewide campus, facilitates sessions for the Intern Prep Course and designs cases and facilitates the annual disaster drills for WARM students. She also works with residents on quality improvement research projects and hosts journal clubs for students and residents. Dr. Shakhnovich received her BS from Marquette University, her MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and an MS from the Ohio State University.
