The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Dean’s Teaching Awards (DTA) were established in 1992 to honor outstanding contributions in student education in medical school programs.
Call For Nominations
Deadline to submit materials: March 2, 2026
These awards are selected by a committee of faculty that have previously been honored for their excellence in teaching, and as such, are the UWSMPH’s only peer-selected teaching award.
- Eligibility: Any individual having a significant impact on the education of SMPH MD, health professional, or PhD students is eligible for nomination. Nominees should have a minimum of five years of teaching experience. (Previous winners are not eligible.)
- Annual awards shall be up to four in number.
- Awardees may be nominated by any faculty or staff of the School of Medicine and Public Health.
- Awardees will demonstrate excellence in at least one of the following:
- Excellence in Teaching: Demonstrates outstanding teaching skills in classroom, small group, and/or clinical settings, supported by evaluation data. Shows sustained dedication to support learners in their professional growth and foster a positive learning environment.
- Excellence in Educational Leadership: Demonstrates outstanding educational program leadership within the SMPH, supported by evaluation data. Consistently employs innovative curriculum development, fosters a positive learning environment, and advances a culture of teaching excellence in their program.
Materials needed to complete the nomination packet:
- Nomination Cover Page
- Letter of support from the nominator
- Summarizing the educational contributions and accomplishments of the nominee that demonstrate excellence in teaching or educational leadership (or both).
- Nomination letters should be addressed to Chair, Dean’s Teaching Awards Selection Committee.
- Summary of individual teaching and/or program evaluations. Summarized numeric comparisons are sufficient, but representative individual comments about teaching quality or impact may be included.
- Nominee’s curriculum vitae, highlighting educational scholarship and dissemination.
Other requirements:
- Nomination letter and summary of evaluations should not exceed 10 pages.
- Nomination packets should not exceed 25 pages.
- Nomination packets must be submitted electronically as a single pdf.
- The complete nomination packet must be submitted by the deadline. Incomplete nomination packets will not be forwarded to the committee.
