This interactive hybrid workshop is intended for assistant professors on the CHS track who expect to go up for promotion to associate professor within the next year or two. Mentors, department leadership, HR promotion coordinators, etc. are also welcome to attend and learn about the promotion process.

This CHS workshop includes:

Panel for questions about promotion.

All consultation times are now filled.

Pathways to Promotion may be attended multiple times. You can find additional promotion related resources available at our “Preparing for Promotion” page.

2025 UWSMPH Education Scholarship Retreat

Wednesday, October 29, 2025 from 12:00pm-4:30pm, In-Person

The Office for Faculty Affairs and Development is excited to invite you to join us for the third annual Education Scholarship Retreat. This year we welcome Dr. Carl Preiksaitis as the keynote speaker to present practical applications of generative AI in medical education and scholarship. We will carry this generative AI theme across other retreat sessions where possible. Lunch will be provided.

We recognize that people have different levels of experience and confidence with education scholarship. In addition to content for all, this year to meet participants where they are at in the scholarship journey, a portion of our retreat will offer you two track options:

Track 101: For those new to education scholarship and looking for fundamental information, tips and tricks.
Track 201: For those more experienced with education scholarship and looking for a deeper dive into topics like grants, publications, and project management.

The retreat is an opportunity to network, ask questions and share your education scholarship experiences.

Mentoring as Scholarship Workshop Series

Session 1- Mentoring as Scholarship: What Counts for Promotion on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, 4:00-6:00 pm, In-Person (HSLC)
Session 2- Mentoring as Scholarship: Documenting Mentoring with Tools and Resources on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, 4:00-6:00 pm, In-Person (HSLC)

Each session will cover different content so participants are encouraged to attend both sessions.

In honor of January being Mentoring Month, the Office for Faculty Affairs and Development (OFAD) is hosting these workshops in collaboration with Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR).

Recent changes to promotion guidelines now include mentoring activities. Attend these 2 interactive workshops to learn more. These 2 workshops are particularly relevant for faculty who are promoting and can report their mentoring activities for promotion and those who are mentoring faculty for promotion and career satisfaction.

We welcome and encourage the participation of faculty on all tracks.

Session 1 – Mentoring as Scholarship: What Counts for Promotion
Includes:

What is mentoring scholarship?
Describing new promotion criteria around mentoring
Discussion on how to articulate what can count for promotion around mentoring

Session 2 – Mentoring as Scholarship: Documenting Mentoring with Tools and Resources
Includes:

Documenting mentoring efforts and accomplishments
Tools and resources to use

Tenure Workshop: Biological Sciences (Health Sciences Focus)

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026, 4:30-6:30pm, Hybrid: HSLC or Zoom

Co-hosted by the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty; this workshop offers an in-depth examination of the UW Madison promotion and tenure process from the perspective of central campus and SMPH.

This course covers:

Preparing a tenure portfolio
Learning to get the most from your mentors
First-hand accounts from recently tenured faculty about preparing for tenure
How the Biological Sciences Divisional committee operates
What the division looks for in successful tenure cases.

During this workshop you can expect the Vice Provost for Faculty & Staff to speak, along with first-hand accounts of recently tenured faculty about preparing for tenure. You will also hear from the Divisional Committee Leadership about how your divisional committee operates and what the committee looks for in successful tenure cases.

This interactive workshop is ideal for CHS and CT early career, assistant professor faculty who are in their first two or three years at SMPH. Mentors, department leadership, HR promotion coordinators, etc. are also welcome to attend and learn about the promotion process.

This workshop includes:

Introductory information regarding the CHS and CT tracks assistant professor faculty
Guidance on mapping your career trajectory
Identifying a purpose and major goals for your career
Guidance on how to jump start the process of organizing and collecting your accomplishments using tools like the PAR method

Navigating Difficult Conversations: Healthy and Effective Approaches

Tuesday, November 19, 2024, 12pm-1:30 pm, virtual

One crucial skill that can positively impact work culture and relationships is the ability to navigate difficult conversations effectively. Sponsored by the Office for Faculty Affairs and Development, this session helped participants get clarity around what it is that differentiates these conversations. Participants discussed how to approach, rather than avoid, these conversations in a healthy, well-prepared way.

Presenters shared a framework for planning the conversation that gave participants an opportunity to practice:

Expand individual awareness of your current approach to emotionally charged, high risk conversations.
Learn how to engage in healthy conversations with confidence and skills.
Learn strategies and tools to prepare for navigating difficult conversations.
Practice navigating difficult conversations using the POISE model.

New Faculty Orientation

New Faculty receive individual invitations to register and more information.

Our goal was to welcome new faculty to our community, introduce them to the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) and UW Health Resources, and learn about the relationship between UW Health and the SMPH. The event also provided an excellent opportunity to connect new faculty members with leadership and colleagues.
