When you begin your new position in Academic Affairs, your HR contact will instruct you on all of the tasks that you need to complete. Learn more about new employee onboarding.

Soon after you start your job in Academic Affairs (and whenever you have a title or location change) please be sure to review your intranet directory listing, and if necessary, update the information there. Additionally, we try to have a photo for everyone on the directory. Please email your new or updated photo to Kristine Fisher at kristine.fisher@wisc.edu.

To get security/badge access to the HSLC, email the 6-digit number located in the bottom middle on the back of your UW ID to an authorized person in your unit. Only authorized personnel can request security access for the HSLC. As of this June 2023, those people are:

  • Miranda Newman
  • Kristine Fisher
  • Elizabeth Tuschen
  • Becki Munson Salzwedel

UW School of Medicine and Public Health All Faculty/Staff Meetings are typically held three times each academic year. The topics discussed at these meetings are broadly relevant to faculty and staff alike and relate to various aspects of the school’s mission. Attending gives everyone a chance to: hear updates from Dean Nita Ahuja, MD, MBA and other administrative leaders, learn more about the school’s goals, participate in question-and-answer sessions, and build community.

For other timely information to help build community within SMPH, take a look at In the Know.

Academic Affairs Staff Meetings are generally bimonthly and run from 9:30–11 a.m. These are generally Webex virtual events, but may occasionally be held on campus in the Harting Mullins Board Room, 4201 HSLC. Be sure that you are on the Academic Affairs Google Groups list at My Google Groups so that you get the emails regarding staff meeting scheduling.

Each fall, members of the SMPH and UW Health community must complete certain trainings and take specific actions to ensure compliance with requirements set forth by the School of Medicine and Public Health, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and UW Health. Visit the annual employee compliance requirements for due dates.

University employees who operate a vehicle on UW business — whether utilizing a personal vehicle (i.e., mileage reimbursement), fleet vehicle, or rental vehicle — must be authorized to drive by UW–Madison Risk Management. Non-authorized drivers will not be reimbursed for any vehicle-related expenses.

You are invited to join the Facebook group called “UW SMPH Academic Affairs.” It’s a closed group, just for Academic Affairs employees. You are by no means required to join the group but you are invited to do so! Dean Petty sometimes posts items of interest to those of us in Academic Affairs.

Faculty and staff at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison can find information about safety procedures from the resources listed at the SMPH Facility Services page.

There, you will find the SMPH Occupant Emergency Plan (OEP) (PDF), an all-hazards plan designed around a building’s unique layout and function. The primary purpose of the OEP is to provide guidance to building occupants in the event of an emergency, such as a tornado, active shooter, gas leak or bomb threat for Health Science Learning Center (HSLC), Medical Science Center (MSC), Wisconsin Institute of Medical Research (WIMR), Wisconsin Psychiatric Institutes & Clinics (WisPIC), Medical Foundation Centennial Building (MFCB), and McArdle (McA).

SMPH PowerPoint and flyer templates are available for use by SMPH faculty, staff, and students.

SMPH supports the use of appropriate flexible and remote work options for employees. Some job responsibilities in SMPH are conducive to remote work, while many are most effectively performed in-person. Work arrangements must comply and align with university policy. Read more at the SMPH Remote Work Guide.

Using a set of guiding principles, the University of Wisconsin–Madison Office of Human Resources has released a robust Remote Work Policy. The guiding principles provide a framework on which to base decisions about remote work. SMPH and other schools, colleges, and divisions within the university are responsible for creating implementation procedures, including identifying specific procedures for evaluating and approving or denying a remote work request in a manner consistent with the policy.

Building Community is a fundamental transition in how we approach our working and learning environment. It is a call to action to examine the ways in which everyone within the School of Medicine and Public Health can build a more inclusive, collegial and respectful community. This effort is ambitious, and it is backed with the leadership and resources needed for success. Together, we can — and we will — make it happen.

There are a multitude of wellness resources available to us in SMPH. Here are a couple of them:
