AI in education
Can I upload this? A quick guide to AI, data privacy, and copyright
Artificial intelligence tools can help with everything from brainstorming course activities to drafting communications and summarizing educational content. But before uploading any materials into an AI tool, it is crucial to consider the nature of the information.
Start by asking three questions:
- Do I have the right to use this content in AI? Before entering content into an AI platform, verify whether the material contains copyrighted content, intellectual property, or materials owned by a third party. If you are unsure, take advantage of available university resources:
- What is the data classification? The type of information matters. Student records, assessment data, instructional materials, research data, and institutional information all carry different requirements. Understanding the data’s classification is often the single most important factor in determining which AI tools are safe to use.
- Which AI tools are approved for my situation? UW–Madison provides several AI tools designed for specific use cases, and available options continue to evolve as new technologies are reviewed and adopted. View the most current list of approved tools and guidance.
Important reminders
- Privacy varies by platform. Not all AI tools offer the same privacy, security or data handling protections.
- Context is key. The appropriateness of an AI tool depends equally on the content being uploaded and your intended purpose.
- Policies are evolving. AI technologies, institutional guidance, and approved tool lists are changing rapidly. Information that is accurate today may be updated tomorrow as new capabilities emerge.
