Jeanne Duncan, Director of Clinical Education

Jeanne Duncan and family

What is your current position?

Director of Clinical Education and Teaching Faculty in the UW–Madison Doctor of Physical Therapy Program.

When did you start working in SMPH?

June 2013.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Every day is a bit different, which is what I enjoy about my job. There are many different duties and responsibilities when it comes to clinical education. With 40 students in each of our 3 cohorts and each student going out for 6 distinct clinical placements at various facilities around the country there are a lot of moving parts.  From requesting and securing these placements from our clinical partners, to matching the students keeping in mind not only the program requirements but also each student’s unique needs and wants from their clinical experiences, to ensuring each student is successful during the clinical placement.  This takes collaboration among many different stakeholders and organizations and flexibility to assist students and clinicians along the way. I often joke that in clinical education, you are always just 1 phone call away from disaster!  My teaching responsibilities vary based on the semester and I enjoy both classroom teaching and running lab-based learning activities, including at the UW Simulation Center.

What is your workplace superpower?

I think keeping all the balls in the air even when an unexpected curve ball is thrown my way.

What is something personal you keep on your desk?

Pottery that was painted by both of my kids when they were young and beautiful Lego flowers that they built that I don’t have to worry about killing.

Where are you from originally?

Originally from the Milwaukee area.  Did go to PT school right here at Madison!

What is your favorite place to spend time in Madison? In the world?

On the Terrace at Memorial Union on a warm summer day! Really anywhere near water with my close family and friends.

What are you reading right now?

I enjoy reading murder mysteries and am currently reading a series by Iona Whishaw.

Share one fact about yourself that you co-workers might not be aware of.

To unwind after stressful days, I enjoy doing arts and crafts.
