Reference Cards
Through a joint effort between SMPH and University Hospital, quick reference emergency phone number cards were developed. One side of the card has SMPH emergency numbers, while the other has hospital emergency numbers.
Occupant Emergency Plan
The SMPH Occupant Emergency Plan (OEP) is an all-hazards plan designed around a building’s unique layout and function. The primary purpose of the OEP is to provide guidance to building occupants in the event of an emergency, such as a tornado, active shooter, gas leak, or bomb threat.
The OEP provides life-saving information to the occupants of the building. Occupants need to know when it is appropriate to evacuate a building, when to shelter in place, and when to hide. This and further life-saving information is found in the OEP.
Every building that has a completed and approved OEP is required to hold at least one emergency drill per year. These drills will test the building occupants with a scenario they may face in real life. Note that the yearly OEP drill is in addition to the required yearly tornado and fire drills.
Emergency Procedures
The UW–Madison Emergency Procedures Guide provides a quick reference to be used in preparation for an emergency on campus. It contains information about weather emergencies, chemical spills, utility failures, bomb threats, suspicious packages and persons, fires and active shooter situations.
The guide cannot cover every emergency that may arise. If you are unsure of what you need to do in your building, please ask your facility manager, contact the University Police at 608-264-COPS (2677), or the Environment, Health & Safety Department at 608-265-5000.
Continuity of Operations Plan
The Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) is designed to identify essential functions and plan for the continuation of these functions during a disaster or emergency. Should a disaster or emergency severely affect the school, the completed COOP plan will be activated. The COOP will ensure delivery of essential functions for up to 30 days and guide the “rebuilding” of the affected department or campus. The COOP will regularly be revised and updated to meet the current threats and vulnerabilities.
WiscAlerts
WiscAlerts is the name for UW–Madison’s emergency notification system. The system is designed to provide information about an active emergency situation that requires the community to take immediate action in order to stay safe.
Although WiscAlerts will be sent via campus email and landline phones, students, faculty and staff can also sign up online to receive alerts via text message. It’s simple and takes just a few moments.

UW Hospital and Clinics Safety and Security
The goal of the safety program is to provide and promote the safest possible physical environment free of hazards using a systematic approach based on the mission and vision of University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC).
UWHC Security is an in-house, uniformed security department that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The main office, located at E6/206, near the hospital’s main entrance, is the destination for all incoming calls to security at 608-890-5555.
