Revised Track Guidelines for Appointment and Promotion

SMPH has revised all guidelines for appointment and promotion for all tracks effective May 2018. The Biological Sciences Divisional Committee has also revised tenure guidelines.

Major changes to all SMPH guidelines include:

  1. Limits on the length of the chair’s letter—it must be no more than 4 to 5 pages.
  2. Addition of a statement to the introduction indicating how professional titles can and should be used.
  3. Clarification of process for selecting outside letter writers.

Major changes to the CHS guidelines include:

  1. Clarification of the definition of Institutional Leadership and the necessary evidence for scholarship if this area is going to be an area of excellence or significant accomplishment. (pgs 4 and 6)
  2. Clarification of the meaning of “arm’s length” in reference to letter writers. (pg 5)
  3. Change in the required number of arm’s length letters to TWO letters instead of one.
  4. Clarification that the department, NOT the candidate, should be writing the summary of the “impact of the candidates teaching on the department and school” (pg 9)
  5. Limits on the length of the chair’s letter—it must be no more than 4 to 5 pages.
  6. Addition of a statement to the introduction indicating how professional titles can and should be used.
  7. Clarification of process for selecting outside letter writers.

Major changes to the Biological Sciences Divisional Committee tenure guidelines include:

  1. There is new guidance for individuals who go up early for promotion and on the handling of clock extensions. (See page 1)
  2. Changes in the section describing the criteria for going up on excellence in teaching. Be sure to read this section very carefully if you are going up in this area. (Read relevant text on pages 5, 11 and 12 in guidelines.)
  3. The process for obtaining arm’s length letters has changed. Please read pages 15 and 16 carefully. Of particular importance is the new requirement to state who proposed the writer of the arm’s length letters. There should be letter writers who are selected by the department chair in addition to letter writers who are suggested to the department chair by the candidate.
  4. There are other small changes that can be found throughout the attached guidelines. Changes are highlighted in yellow. Please review these carefully.
