Centennial Scholars Program

The goal of the Centennial Scholars Program is to develop faculty whose diversity enhances the quality of education and research at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and who may serve as visible and available role models for students and trainees, especially those from underrepresented minority backgrounds.

The Centennial Scholars Program is offered based on the conviction that the patient care, research and educational enterprise of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and the effectiveness of the medical school in serving the needs of the citizens of Wisconsin receive a direct and substantial benefit if there is broad diversity among the school’s students, faculty and staff.

Diverse role models such as Centennial Scholars are absolutely vital if we are to prepare our students to be effective participants in the 21st Century healthcare workforce where they will face widely diverse people, cultures, and ideas in an environment that is becoming increasingly global.

Toward these ends, the UW School of Medicine and Public Health is fully committed to developing faculty, educators and staff whose diversity enhances the quality of education, patient care, clinical reasoning and research in multiple settings.

To facilitate this process, Centennial Scholars Program funds are available to assist departments in developing highly qualified individuals, especially those from underrepresented groups, who are clearly committed to a career in academic medicine.

Structure of the Centennial Scholars Program

An advisory committee consisting of senior faculty and ex-officio members serves as the screening and review committee. The committee will select Centennial Scholars from faculty, teachers and staff at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health as defined above, emphasizing academic career development in research, education and leadership.

1. Preference is given for applications of those at the most junior faculty level (CHS and tenure tracks).

2. Applications are accepted on a rolling deadline and reviewed by the advisory committee on a quarterly basis. Application requirements include a completed application form, curriculum vitae, a two page personal statement, and a letter from the applicant’s chair with assurance of 50% protected time yearly for three years. The letter, co-signed by the applicant and chair, will describe a plan with milestones and a timeline, outlining a vision for the applicant’s academic progress over the next three to five years, spelling out in detail how the funding would be used to provide protected time for the applicant’s proposed scholarly activities.

3. General Funding Guidelines: Scholars will receive an initial three-year period of support, approximately $70,000 per year or 50 percent of base salary, whichever is higher but not to exceed 80 percent of total compensation. Funding will normally be provided to the scholar’s department for salary support of their protected time, but may be used for other types of research or scholarly support with the mutual agreement of the department, scholar, and CSP Advisory Committee. The request for alternative use of the funds must be put in writing and submitted to the CSP Advisory Committee. There will be an expectation of at least 50 percent protected time for scholarly activities in all cases. If a scholar receives other development grants such as a K Award, funding may be preserved and used for other academic support.

4. Scholars will establish a mentorship committee, which will include a minimum of two mentors and the department’s chair, with a mentor in their own department and a second mentor with expertise in a specific methodology or area, with regular meetings planned. The applicant’s chair will describe a mentoring plan in the application letter.

5. A yearly progress report from the scholar will be required to be presented. Review by the advisory committee will be done to monitor progress and standards and provide a warning notification if there are significant problems. The program’s leadership may terminate an award, after careful review and consideration, if the terms of the award are not being met, or if there are other circumstances which warrant termination.

6. The program will encourage the development of a research and educational network of faculty members across the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus for each scholar, to be aided by the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research staff. Coordination will take place between the Centennial Scholars Program and the Pre K program and KL 2 Scholars Program within the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research-REC Core for application opportunities and content offered by the programs.
