We are seeking candidates from among our current SMPH CT, CHS, and tenure track faculty members who are interested in serving in the role of Assistant Dean for Students starting approximately on July 29, 2024. This position in the MD program provides leadership and support for MD student services. Apply by Friday, May 10, 2024.
The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience in academic medicine or related areas of a medical school, as well as experience working with medical students across all four years of the degree program is highly desirable. The ideal candidate should be a current SMPH faculty member at associate professor level or higher, in tenure, CHS, or CT track, and able to devote up to 40% FTE to this position. SMPH assistant professors who meet other listed criteria and will be eligible for promotion to associate professor within two years will be considered if supported by their department chair.

- Preferred: Administrative leadership experience in student affairs or related areas of medical education and have knowledge of/or experience with clinical teaching programs.
Job Summary: The Assistant Dean for Students for the MD Program at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health provides leadership and support for student services both with the SMPH and the University to facilitate existing and new programs to improve student life and education under the direction of the SMPH Associate Dean for Students. This position provides students with advising and support to fulfill the mission of providing each student with excellent learning opportunities that promote personal and professional development.
Job Responsibilities:
Student Advising and Support: 75%
- Provide guidance and advice to medical students on their academic programs, professional development, and student life issues.
- Participate in review of medical student academic progress systemically to identify early concerns with student performance and coordinate resources for assistance.
- Collaborate with the Student Services team to support the academic success of individual students and support the development and implementation of success programs, including the development of Individualized Academic Plans for students.
- Work with the Director of Student Success and MD Program Coordinator to advise and support the activities of the Medical Student Association, other student interest groups, and the InterHouse Council; develop guidelines and monitor student organizations and extracurricular activities to ensure compliance with administrative policies and procedures.
- Participate as an ex-officio member of the Student Promotion and Academic Review Committee (SPARC) to monitor academic progress for students referred to the committee, ensuring due process is followed.
- Collaborate with the Director of Career Advising and the Academic & Career Advising Program (ACAP) to support students in the residency match and assist with the NRMP process, including ERAS, to assure optimal placement of UW medical students in residency programs.
- Participate with the Associate Dean for Students and other student services staff in writing Medical Student Performance Evaluations (Dean’s Letters) for graduating medical students.
Student Programs: 25%
- Collaborate with the Director of Student Success to develop, implement, and assess learner well-being programs and coordinate with the UHS student health, counseling, and psychiatric programs as needed for medical student support.
- Collaborate with the Director of Student Services to develop and implement tools to assess the programmatic work of the Student Services Office to promote continuous quality improvement.
- Join the Associate Dean for Students, the Signature Events team and the Director of the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association in developing programs and ceremonies for graduation, honors and awards, White Coat Ceremony, and other similar activities.
Additional Information:
The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Associate Dean for Students and will work collaboratively with the key senior administrative staff in the Academic Affairs section of the school. This staff includes the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Associate Dean for Medical Student Education and Services, the Associate Dean for Medical Education, the Associate Dean for Admissions, the Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs, the Director of Student Services, and the Student Academic Services staff. The Assistant Dean will work closely with the Dean of the school, the Ombudsperson .and the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association as needed on special projects and events.
