Oversized semi trucks going to VA to impact travel to and from west campus

A version of the following was posted on UW Health’s intranet called U-Connect on Nov. 13, 2023. See the original here (access using UW Health credentials or VPN).

Beginning, Wednesday, Nov. 15, 270 oversized semis will deliver precast concrete for the VA’s parking ramp. For the trucks to access the VA, the right lane of the Campus Drive exit ramp onto Highland Avenue will be one lane, and flaggers will be stationed on Highland to stop traffic so the semis can make a wide left turn into the VA.

The deliveries are expected to take 7-10 weeks (i.e. ending sometime in January). That range is dependent on many variables and may change.

Expect delays. Flaggers will assist with traffic but the trucks will obstruct two-way traffic while making their left turns. Especially coupled with the construction in Lot 75 (the UH patient and visitor ramp) there may be delays.

Traffic is being monitored closely by the city of Madison. The city has the ability to adjust the plan for truck traffic and the signal lights. City and project staff are working with UW Health, campus, and the Village of Shorewood Hills to minimize disruption and solve problems that occur.
