Kujichagulia Madison Center for Self-Determination has brought the community together to celebrate Juneteenth and highlight Black excellence, culture, and community. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865. On this day, the last enslaved people learned slavery had been outlawed and that they were finally free. This was over two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, and hundreds of years after chattel slavery began in the United States.
As a sponsor of this important event for more than 15 years, participating in this community event is an opportunity to recommit to our vision of dismantling racism in ourselves, in our system, and in our community. For staff who would like to attend the event please see the schedule below:

“Black Resilience: Collective Liberation and Transformation”
- 10:45 am – Juneteenth Parade, from Fountain of Life Church (633 W. Badger Rd.) to Penn Park (2101 Fisher St.)
- Noon – Celebration at Penn Park, featuring food stands, market vendors, games and activities, music, art and much more
