We are seeking candidates from among our current SMPH CT, CHS, and tenure track faculty members who are interested in serving as the SMPH Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs for Health Professions Learners within the Office of Academic Affairs starting August 1, 2023. The position will remain open until filled, but the assured consideration deadline is May 25.
The ideal candidate will have at least five years of leadership experience in academic medicine or related areas of a medical school or health professional degree program; knowledge of and/or experience with diversity, equity, inclusion programs that support learners and/or faculty across disciplines and health professions. Experience working with learners in more than one degree program is highly desirable. Experience with program development, administrative leadership, grant writing, and scholarly presentations and manuscripts is desirable.
The ideal candidate should be a current SMPH faculty member at associate professor level or higher, in tenure, CHS, or CT track, and able to devote at least 40% FTE to this position. SMPH assistant professors who meet other listed criteria and will be eligible for promotion to associate professor within two years will be considered if supported by their department chair.

Principal duties: The Associate Dean of Multicultural Affairs for Health Professions Learners at UWSMPH will provide expert leadership, vision, and oversight for programs that are designed to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for all health professions learners within the school. This includes learners in the Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Genetic Counselor Studies, Master of Physician Assistant Studies, and Master of Public Health professional degree programs.
The Associate Dean in this role will oversee the school’s Office of Multicultural Affairs for Health Professions Learners and directly supervise the administrative director of this office. The Associate Dean will help develop, oversee, and ensure progress on mission-aligned strategic priorities of the office. They will help shape pathway, recruitment, and support programs across the school that promote learner recruitment, retention, and success. They will support, assess, and enhance existing programs; facilitate the development of new programs that help fulfill our UWSMPH mission, vision, and values; and work effectively with others within and beyond Academic Affairs to create a supportive learning environment that promotes inclusive and equitable personal and professional development for diverse learners.
The Associate Dean will work in close partnership with other deans and directors who support services for students, residents, fellows, and faculty mentors. The Associate Dean will report directly to the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and will be expected to build and maintain strong collaborative and synergistic relationships with the school’s Associate Dean for Diversity & Equity Transformation, the Director for the Native American Center for Health Professions, and the Director of Pathway and Recruitment Programs. They will serve on relevant school committees; engage with students, staff, and faculty within and beyond the office; and participate in various school and campus events that support learners.
Responsibilities
Health Professions Student Facing and Support Responsibilities: 65% (of the time and effort commitment to this Associate Dean position)
- Shape, develop, implement, and evaluate programs to recruit and support underrepresented in medicine (URiM) students across all health professional degree programs at UWSMPH.
- Provide guidance and advice to UWSMPH program directors, assistant and associate deans on pathway, recruitment, professional development, and support programs for applicants and learners from diverse backgrounds.
- Ensure that all student programs are well-aligned with the UWSMPH mission, vision and values and that relevant policies and procedures are compliant with school and university guidelines and goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Serve as a learner liaison to UWSMPH leaders, including associate and assistant deans, and program directors across the school on issues related to DEI impacting learners and the learning environment.
- Review program initiatives and key metrics relevant to learners within and across programs to identify areas for growth and continuous quality improvement.
- Oversee faculty mentoring programs that support diverse learners (e.g., BEAM) and provide one-on-one support to learners and faculty mentors as needed in areas of professional, academic, and career development.
- Assist with admissions recruitment and pathway programs to enhance diversity of the health profession and graduate medical education programs.
- Contribute to reports, publications, web sites, and other communication resources for multicultural affairs and diversity to ensure current, accurate information related to learners.
- Provide faculty-level leadership to UWSMPH student/learner organizations that focus on multicultural and diversity issues.
- Bring together leaders of UWSMPH learner DEI programs to identify synergies, growth opportunities, and efficiencies of operations.
Administrative Leadership: 30%
- Supervise, mentor, and support faculty and staff within and across the Office of Multicultural Affairs for Health Professions Learners to meet mission-aligned goals.
- Participate in ongoing monitoring of compliance with applicable DEI accreditation standards for UWSMPH health professions programs and lead continuous quality improvement initiatives to meet or exceed such standards.
- Work with administrative director to ensure the financial health and fiscal sustainability within the office.
- Prepare documents and presentations regarding goals and outcomes of DEI programs designed to recruit and support learners.
- Facilitate the development of communication networks to provide the UWSMPH community with ongoing information about diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that impact learners.
- Engage with deans and directors of programs across Academic Affairs and SMPH that are focused on building a supportive multicultural community, working with the Building Community initiatives.
- Collaborate with the UW DEI leaders and statewide campus leaders to broadly enhance DEI programs that impact learners.
- Serve on committees, and/or appoint delegates, that advance the diversity, equity, and inclusion mission of the school, such as the Building Community Steering Committee, Strategic Improvement and Accreditation Committee, and the Student Mistreatment Triage Committee.
- Seek and support intramural and extramural funding opportunities to support programmatic growth.
Graduate Medical Education: 5%
- Help enrich and expand diversity and multicultural programs for residents in collaboration with the deans and others overseeing graduate medical education (GME).
- Collaborate with GME offices to shape and develop programs to recruit and support residency and fellowship programs at UWSMPH and UW Health.
- Assist with the development of programs, policies, and procedures to support longitudinal pathway programs.
- Help ensure that GME programs, policies, and procedures are compliant with accreditation and institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion guidelines and goals.
- Actively engage in meetings with GME leaders.

Additional Information
The Associate Dean reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. This individual will work collaboratively with the key senior administrative staff in the Academic Affairs section of the UWSMPH, including the Associate Dean for Medical Student Education and Services, Associate Dean for Student Services, Associate Dean for Medical Education, the Assistant Dean for Admissions, Director of Multicultural Affairs, Director of Student Services, Student Services Coordinator, Student Academic Services staff, and the Program Directors for other Health Professional Programs at UWSMPH.
