HR hosting Lunch & Learn on Family and Medical Leave Act

Happy 30th anniversary to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)! February 5, 2023 marks 30 years since President Bill Clinton signed the FMLA into law in 1993. Under the FMLA, eligible employees are able to take up to 12 work weeks of unpaid*, job-protected leave for eligible medical and family reasons, such as the birth of a child, the adoption of or placement of child(ren) in foster care, an employee’s own serious health condition, and to care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition. Additional protections were added to the FMLA allowing employees time off related to the deployment of immediate family members in the military and to care for covered service members with serious injuries or illnesses. Since its inception, the FMLA has helped millions of employees take the time they need and balance work and personal medical and/or family responsibilities without fear of losing their jobs.

To celebrate 30 momentous years, SMPH Divisional Disability Representatives (DDRs) Brittney Quam and Pa Nhia Lee Chentnik are hosting a virtual lunch and learn session on Feb. 22 from 11 a.m.-noon for SMPH employees interested in learning more about FMLA, the SMPH leave process, and what to do if they need to take medical and/or family leave.

For more information about medical and family leaves and/or to register for the FMLA Lunch and Learn, visit the SMPH Medical Leaves webpage. If you have any questions about this event or if you have questions regarding your own need for medical and/or family leave, please contact a SMPH DDR a smph-fmla@med.wisc.edu.
